Driving Leadership Excellence Through Inclusive Social Accountability

Message from the ABASA President

The month of June in my mind is fitting of the word "Leadership" which I would like to focus on in this message, as we continue unpacking ABASA's three-year mandate of Driving Leadership Excellence Through Inclusive Social Accountability.

As presented in our National Leadership and Membership Induction on the 2nd of April 2022, some of the words that come to mind when thinking about the type of leadership our organization would like to see and produce include:

  • consistent
  • committed
  • advocacy
  • servant
  • selfless
  • forward thinking

Leading in unprecedented times
As the Covid-19 restrictions relax we are now faced with an energy supply crisis and rising costs that continue to impact businesses, education imperatives, mental wellbeing and general productivity so adversely.

As an organization with a committed back office team of young people who assist our Board, National and Provincial Leadership and Student Chapter Leaders in servicing our growing membership base, it is important that we lead with agility and with compassion. We must strive to put the underlying needs of our people first in these challenging times in our country. We encourage all our members and stakeholders to do the same and to make time to check up on the people who drive the work of our respective organizations.

I would like to applaud our back office team for their resilience and our members and stakeholders for your continued patience as we all navigate through this "dark" period in our country.

Driving Leadership Excellence Through Inclusive Social Accountability.

Message from the ABASA President
As I write this message to you I am a bag of mixed emotions. That feeling you get as you near the end of a marathon, exhausted from the distance you have covered but excited by the vision of the finish line ahead of you. The final push for the year is upon us as we prepare for our National Annual Convention and Flagship Event, closing off an amazing year.

Before I get into what to look forward to this month let me start by reflecting on the month that was.

This month we look at the second last word of our national theme, Driving Leadership Excellence Through Inclusive Social Accountability : Social

The words that come to mind as shared with our national leadership at our national leadership induction in April this year are:
  • Concern for social ills
  • Consciousness
  • Equity
  • Economic
  • For the greater good
  • Impact
In the words of former Minister of Finance, Trevor Manuel, "ABASA has a moral authority in this country and we must be the B in ABASA". As I read the key words above I am reminded of this challenge to ABASA and the responsibility that comes with the social mandate of this organization. The responsibility to stand up for what others may not have the courage to stand up for. To be conscious of who we are and the role we play in South Africa.

"We" means all of us as an aligned and focused collective because it is only in unity and collaboration that we drive meaningful impact for the greater good of our country.

KEY ANNUAL EVENT

The Annual ABASA Convention

The ABASA Convention is our Annual flagship event. Its focus is the creation of a pipeline of leaders who will push the agenda of transformation at higher echelons of management. It is an opportunity for ABASA to showcase what the organisation is about and to create a platform for potential employers to engage with black talent. It presents an opportunity for the organisation to set targets for the next 12 months, report on activities of the organisation to members and celebrate the milestones of transforming the profession.

Committed To The Advancement Of Black Accountants

As a non-profit organisation, ABASA relies on contributions and funds raised from members and from stakeholders in the broader business and education community. We accept ad-hoc contributions from a wide range of philanthropic organizations from time to time, however, our most successful form of raising funds has been via our membership fees and events. Please see below for our upcoming events and opportunities to sponsor these.
